Mass of Thanksgiving The Auburn Catholic Community is celebrating a joint Mass of Thanksgiving to be held at Saint Mary’s Church at 9:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, November 27, 2008. As this years host church, Saint Mary’s is inviting members of the Auburn Catholic faith community to join in giving thanks for our many blessings. St. Mary’s will also be celebrating an earlier Community Mass at 7:00am for those who can’t attend the concelebrated Mass. The collections will be divided between the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry and the Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes (CCFL) Emergency Assistance Program. This program enables CCFL to give financial assistance to those in need locally for basic needs including personal hygiene items; baby-related items such as diapers, special formula; prescriptions and other medical/health-related needs, transportation, utilities/heating, and rent. Both the Food Pantry and CCFL have seen a substantial increase of families who are in need and your generous donations are always greatly appreciated.

Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) Hopefully everyone has received the Catholic Ministries Appeal mailing by this time and has had a chance to review the materials. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Our Faith, Our Future.” The CMA affords each of us an opportunity to support the larger Church so that it can meet real needs throughout the Diocese. Your support enables the Church to be responsive and caring. Please be generous in your response. Every gift is needed and important!

Building Faithful Citizenship
It may seem easy to live in a world where it is “us versus them,” and, “If you're not with us, you’re against us.” This form of logic creates a sense of right and wrong that distinguishes the good and the bad people with little effort. In this Sunday’s gospel, the “good” people are hearing from Jesus that “those people” (tax collectors, prostitutes, sinners in general) are the ones who are getting into God’s reign long before they are. One of the central points of Catholic social teaching is a spirit of solidarity (FC #53). This spirit summons us to bring down the walls that divide, whether they are local or international, and embrace our differences. With solidarity there is no longer an “us versus them” attitude but rather one of, “We are all in this together.” Reflection: When I listen to candidates’ agendas, do they convey a spirit of solidarity with people “not like us” or do they try to define who’s right and who’s wrong? |
